Our thoughts have turned to Christmas here at Tumbledown Cottage. This week I will be making some sweet cinnamon popcorn with my mammy Kitty to snack on while we watch The Toy Show on Friday night. We will also make some of this popcorn at Christmas time to give as gifts to our family and friends. We like to put it in bags with pretty festive labels or tie it with ribbon before delivering it on Christmas Eve. Please ask a grown up to help you with this recipe and have fun in the kitchen together.

  • 30g unsalted butter
  • 2tbsp oil
  • 2tbsp popcorn kernels (approximately)
  • 2tbsp dark brown sugar
  • 1/2tsp cinnamon
  • Pinch of sea salt

Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Put the butter into a small heatproof dish and ask a grown up to place it in the preheating oven to melt.

img_0246-225x300While the oven is heating ask a grown up to pop the corn kernels for you. They will need to heat the oil in a large pot set over a medium high heat, once the oil is hot tell the grown up to add the corn kernels to cover the base of the pot in an even layer. If more kernels are needed the grown up can add them. Place the lid on the pot and turn the heat to medium until the kernels stop popping. Ask the grown up to remove the pot from the heat.

Now ask the grown up to remove the melted butter from the oven, allow it to cool slightly so that the dish is not too hot to handle. Mix in the sugar, cinnamon and salt and pour it over the popcorn, mix to coat evenly.

Spread the popcorn out on the lined baking sheet. Ask a grown up to place the baking sheet into the oven and bake for 10 minutes. Ask a grown up to remove the baking sheet from the oven and allow the popcorn to cool for a couple of minutes before eating. If bagging the popcorn up as a gift allow it to cool completely before placing into a bag. Seal the bag and decorate with pretty stickers or a ribbon.
